The ‘likeability paradox’ – why is it so difficult for female leaders to be both liked and respected?15 Jan 2021

When we are asked to think of words that would usually be associated with Leadership and Management, the list will often include: strong, powerful, decisive, determined, assertive, aggressive, forceful, competitive, visionary, inspiring, winner, brave and so on.

What about words describing male characteristics? Strong, decisive, determined, assertive, aggressive, competitive, winner, brave, bold?

The paradigms of an historically male dominated world will of course have ingrained concepts of leadership that are to do with power, risk taking and strength. The huge correlation between traditionally male traits and leadership traits is therefore to be expected.

Now think of words for female characteristics – typically – gentle, nurturing, caring, collaborative, kind, accommodating, empathic, and supportive?

You’ll be able to see from these few lines the reasons why it is hard for woman in management and leadership roles to be both liked and respected
